Stack-up & materials

How should RF material be specified?

Name the exact laminate or performance requirement and state whether alternatives are allowed; RF substitutions should never be assumed.

Reviewed
Direct answer

Identify the exact laminate grade and thickness, copper type or profile where relevant, electrical and thermal requirements, stack-up, controlled structures, surface finish, and any permitted alternatives. Mixed PTFE and FR-4 constructions can be reviewed, but material compatibility and availability must be confirmed for the project.

Material definition

A brand name alone may not define grade, thickness, cladding, or acceptable substitute. Link each material callout to the layer construction.

  • Manufacturer and laminate grade
  • Core or bond-ply thickness and copper cladding
  • Dk/Df frequency or test-method context when performance-controlled
  • Copper profile or roughness requirement where relevant
  • Thermal, dimensional, or compliance requirement
  • Explicit list of permitted or prohibited alternatives

Quote and release checks

Confirm the quoted material, construction, lead-time assumption, and any proposed alternative in writing. A final electrical design decision remains with the customer's authorized engineer.

Next useful step

Final capability, commercial terms, and project records are confirmed against the actual RFQ and written project documents.
